The treatment of an alcoholic must of necessity begin with haste. Here is a patient who is often reluctant to cooperate and difficult to hold.
Rarely, it is recommended in homeopathic prescribing that specific remedies be used in the treatment of any disease. Careful observation and consideration are vital to the selection of a successful remedy.
In the case of chronic alcoholism, however, an exception may be made to this important rule. Three basic remedies should immediately be used. These preparations will make a noticeable – even dramatic – improvement in the condition of the patient and the patient will now want to cooperate with further treatment. It is interesting to note that no withdrawal symptoms have been recorded during drying out periods under this treatment.
Also described here suggested remedies for the relief of acute stages of drunkenness – delirium tremens – state of violence, delusion or stupor. Then follow medicines which will help the body to overcome chronic effects of prolonged alcohol abuse.
Here are included some remedies effective in the treatment of drug addiction and a combinations which cures or controls the tobacco habit. Excluded are several remedies for hereditary and chronic alcoholism which are best administered by an expert homeopath.
Each remedy covers a wide range of symptoms of various diseases or conditions. Here only related to the treatment are described. No patient will reflect all the given symptoms. Several pronounced indications will serve to select the correct remedy – the nearer one is able to match the case with the remedy, the greater the measures of success.
A suggested strength of potency of each remedy will be given as an initial guideline. It will be noticed that the more acute or pronounced the symptoms, the higher or stronger the potency such as 200, 1M or 10M.
High potencies are given in limited doses – stopping as long as improvement continues. The lowest potencies are cleansers and are used for longer periods. All remedies should be taken between meals. Coffee, raw-onion, garlic, spices, pickles, mints and strong curries, etc should be avoided. As body response to the treatment, a discharge or eruptions may appear. This should be welcomed. On no account this process be interrupted or suppressed by external applications.
NUX VOMICA This is the leading remedy for alcoholism, in all acute and chronic cases. Kind and affectionate people before the continued use of alcohol, when they are radically changed and become violent and abusive, impatient, irritable, scornful and quarrelsome. They becomes oversensitive, cannot bear the slightest contradiction, even gentle persuasion.
They become jealous and malicious, insulting even to striking. Sometimes weeping and inclined to sadness, they drink to forget. Having great genital excitement while drinking, they are licentious (unprincipled in the sexual matters) only in the imagination – yet sometime quite immoral.
Shrewd and thieving, they spend through ostentation but are mean with their own family and are likely to gamble away a fortune little by little. They are inclined to commit suicide by shooting or stabbing, sometimes drowning.
They have a mania for refusing medical treatment. The continued abuse of alcohol causes liver complaints. They become dizzy, their eyesight is weakened and their hands tremble. They spit often and are heavy smokers. They have bitter taste in the morning, and great dryness of the mouth.
Their violent vomiting, regurgitation, hiccoughs and other gastric problems are invariably worse after food or drink.
Generally they suffer from constipation.
In acute cases 200 potency – 3 doses half hourly in the late evening for a week.
In chronic cases, lower potencies are given 3 times a day in the evening for 3 to 4 months. The remedy must be continued till fully recovered.
QUERCUS Here we see a person drinks to keep his spirit up. Generally these persons are exceedingly nervous, easily moved to tears and quite capable of stating his own case. They are generally looking gloomy and morose and taciturn. They get dizzy, and have yellow eyes, which are puffy underneath. A flushed face and foul breath like faeces. They suffer from dyspepsia, has trembling hands, a tottering gait and intense craving for liquor. This remedy creates disgust for alcohol and often induces cleansing diarrhoea.
Generally Q or lower potencies are used.
SYPHILINUM This is the principle remedy for a hereditary tendency to alcoholism. This means alcohol in any form. Excessive saliva flows from the mouth at night. The person may have successions of abscesses and ulceration of mouth, nose, skin and genitals or he had these eruptions which have been suppressed, generally, they have constipation, fissures and prolapsus of rectum. All the ailments are worse at night. Sleeplessness with mental and physical prostration is seen in the morning. These people despairs of recovery and thinks, they will go crazy.
Potency like 1M or higher should be used in not frequent doses or every 6 days.
NOTE: These three basic remedies are to e used concurrently. The dosage given prove very effective in the average case of compulsive drinking provided the patient want to be cured and undertakes to cooperate fully with the treatment.
